India to Deploy First 100 MWh Utility-Scale Flow Battery

Brocom News Network | Technology

India is set to deploy its first 100 MWh utility-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) Energy Storage System, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. The project will be installed at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat, one of the world’s largest renewable energy parks.

The project has been awarded by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) to Bondada Engineering Ltd, with Delectrik Systems serving as the technology partner. The system will be designed, engineered, and manufactured in India, supporting the government’s “Make in India” initiative.

Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries are designed for long-duration energy storage, offering longer operational life, improved safety, and the ability to store renewable energy for extended periods. This makes them ideal for balancing electricity generated from solar and wind power.

The battery system is expected to be deployed in 2027 and will include 10 years of operations and maintenance. It will help stabilize the power grid, improve renewable energy integration, and strengthen India’s growing energy storage infrastructure.
