Tata’s First Semiconductor Plant May Start with 90nm Chips Instead of 28nm

Brocom News Network | Technology Desk

India’s first large-scale semiconductor fabrication plant, being built by Tata Electronics in Dholera, Gujarat, is expected to begin chip production using 90nm and 55nm process technology instead of the previously highlighted 28nm node, according to recent reports. The phased approach is aimed at helping the company establish manufacturing capabilities before moving to more advanced technologies.

While 90nm chips are older than 28nm technology, they remain widely used in automotive electronics, industrial equipment, power management systems, and microcontrollers. These mature chips continue to see strong global demand despite not being suitable for high-end smartphones or AI processors.

Tata Electronics has clarified that the Dholera fab is designed to manufacture chips across 28nm to 110nm technology nodes. The company says production will begin with mature nodes such as 55nm and 90nm, with 28nm remaining a key part of its long-term roadmap. The project, developed in partnership with Taiwan’s PSMC, is expected to strengthen India’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

Key Highlights:

  • Tata’s Dholera fab may initially produce 90nm and 55nm chips.
  • 28nm production is planned in a later phase.
  • Mature chips are widely used in automobiles, industrial electronics, and IoT devices.
  • The project marks a major step toward India’s goal of building a domestic semiconductor industry.
