Government Clarifies E20 Fuel Impact

Brocom News Network | National

The Government of India has issued fresh clarifications on the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol (20% ethanol-blended fuel), addressing public concerns over engine performance, mileage, warranties, and insurance.

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, extensive testing by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) found no compatibility issues or adverse impact on vehicle performance for vehicles approved to use E20 fuel.

The government acknowledged that older vehicles originally designed for E10 fuel may experience a fuel efficiency reduction of around 3–5% when using E20. However, it said there is no widespread evidence that E20 causes engine damage or vehicle breakdowns.

Officials also clarified that:

  • E20 fuel does not invalidate vehicle warranties or motor insurance for compatible vehicles.
  • Reports claiming the government described the E20 programme as an “experiment” before the Supreme Court are incorrect.
  • There is no decision to increase ethanol blending beyond 20% at present. Any future move will follow scientific studies and stakeholder consultations.

The Centre says the ethanol blending programme has reduced crude oil imports, lowered carbon emissions, and increased income opportunities for farmers while strengthening India’s energy security.

Key Highlights

  • Government says E20 is safe for approved vehicles.
  • Older E10 vehicles may see 3–5% lower mileage.
  • No impact on vehicle warranty or insurance for compatible vehicles.
  • Government denies calling the E20 programme an “experiment.”
  • No plan to increase ethanol blending beyond 20% for now.
