Three men posing as Crime Branch officers allegedly duped a silver trader in Varanasi and fled with silver worth nearly ₹60 lakh, police said. The incident took place in the city’s busy jewelry market, where the accused reportedly introduced themselves as law enforcement officials and claimed they needed to inspect the trader’s silver. After gaining the trader’s trust, they escaped with the valuables.
The trader later informed the police, who have registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and gathering evidence to identify and trace the suspects. Police believe the accused may have planned the operation in advance.
Authorities have urged traders and business owners to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police or government official before handing over valuables or documents. They also advised people to immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
